Janet's Successful recovery from Plantar Fasciitis and Ankle stability

Janet came to see me with Plantar fasciitis in both feet and was unable to walk around the house easily. Janet could only walk short distances with a walking aid and had tried all of the usual fixes from foot massagers to orthotics. Janet said she was fortunate as she was able to work from home some of the time as driving was becoming, challenging.

Janet used to exercise lots doing karate and keep fit along with walking the dog pre lockdown. Janet said the pain started in one foot and then moved to the other, the rocket for coming to see me was not been able to get out of a chair without family help.

Janet also had ankle issues with an injury in one so very unstable and most likely the reason for plantar fasciitis starting. Janet had all of the standard issues with Plantar Fasciitis and looked at may options as she works as a analyst so is used to looking at variables. Initially the focus was on Pain relief in each foot and increasing range of movement in ankles and walking short strides to minimise loading. Janet had a different response to her first session she had a significant drop in pain but importantly she commented how much better in herself she felt like a massive weight had been lifted. We attributed this to some positive progress and structured goals so her brain stopped analysing and worrying about the future with her plantar fasciitis.

Janet is very technical, and likes all the data and information on what is happening, numbers readings, and interpretation and I am a talker so a perfect match. The second session saw Janet been able to walk short distances with her modified walk and no walking aid along with having much better capacity to do normal house hold activities like cooking and cleaning. Janet also needed less help when getting out of chairs even when been sat for some time. Janet can be very focused and had to practice her walking daily with a new technique which helped pain and mobility but also gave an additional break from the computer when working.

Janet’s progress was improving steadily and she was able to do normal life at home and walk the dog with the family something she had not been able to do for some time. This was the catalyst for practicing some karate moves and training at home, also doing online Pilates and work out videos! Her word she felt like trying them and felt confident she could do them. The conversation that followed was not about her foot or ankle issues but her frustration at lack of fitness, strength and balance.

This was great as her plantar fasciitis was well on the mend as Janet had started doing activity without thinking and trying to do normal things as her pain was significantly reduced and her mobility improving daily. Janet was now moving and driving largely pain free with some discomfort in one foot. Janet started walking much longer distances and going shopping and not using any aids or requiring help.

Janet Coley Exercises

Janet wanted to push herself further post treatments so I have given her some advanced ankle and foot exercises to really target her weaker areas and the strengthen her up.

She tried the exercises and then complained that they were really hard and I made them look easy!
